POPOLJAY Q'EQCHI: A PLACE WHERE THE INMATERIAL MEETS THE MATERIAL

This project exemplifies a harmonious blend of cultural heritage and sustainable design. Developed by Torus, this initiative honors the traditions of the Q'eqchi' community while integrating modern architectural practices.

The design draws inspiration from the traditional "Popol Jay," a communal house central to Q'eqchi' culture, serving as a space for gatherings, decision-making, and cultural preservation. By reinterpreting this concept, the project creates a contemporary space that fosters community engagement and cultural continuity.

Sustainability is a cornerstone of the Popol Jay Q'eqchi'. The project employs locally sourced materials and passive design strategies to minimize environmental impact and promote energy efficiency. Natural ventilation, daylighting, and rainwater harvesting systems are integrated to align with the community's ecological values.

The architecture facilitates an open-plan layout, promoting flexibility for various community events and functions. Large openings and transitional spaces establish an immediate dialogue with the natural landscape, reinforcing the connection between the built environment and the surrounding ecosystem. The roof was carefully designed to keep track of the sun during equinoxes for the begginning of planting and harvesting seasons.

This project has been recognized for its innovative approach, being selected to participate in the 22nd Bienal de Arte Paiz: Geografía perversa / Geografías malditas in 2021.

The Popol Jay Q'eqchi' stands as a testament to the potential of architecture to serve as a bridge between tradition and modernity, providing a sustainable and culturally resonant space for the Q'eqchi' community.
